Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1270160 By Arlo Guthrie. By Arlo Guthrie. Arranged by Craig Hanson. A Cappella,Comedy,Folk. Octavo. 6 pages. Edition Craig Hanson #862589. Published by Edition Craig Hanson (A0.1270160). For TTBB chorus a cappella and solo voice. As performed by Arlo Guthrie.Wanna hear something? You know that Indians never ate clams. They didn't have linguini! And so what happened was that clams was allowed to grow unmolested in the coastal waters of America for millions of years. And they got big, and I ain't talking about clams in general, I'm talking about each clam! Individually. I mean each one was a couple of million years old or older. So imagine they could have got bigger than this whole room. And when they get that big, God gives them little feet so that they could walk around easier. And when they get feet, they get dangerous. I'm talking about real dangerous. I ain't talking about sitting under the water waiting for you. I'm talking about coming after you.Imagine being on one of them boats coming over to discover America, like Columbus or something, standing there at night on watch, everyone else is either drunk or asleep. And you're watching for America and the boat's going up and down. And you don't like it anyhow but you gotta stand there and watch, for what? Only he knows, and he ain't watching. You hear the waves lapping against the side of the ship. The moon is going behind the clouds. You hear the pitter patter of little footprints on deck. ‘Is that you kids?’ It ain't! My god! It's this humongous, giant clam!Imagine those little feet coming on deck. A clam twice the size of the ship. Feet first. You're standing there shivering with fear, you grab one of these. This is a belaying pin. They used to have these stuck in the holes all around the ship… You probably didn't know what this is for; you probably had an idea, but you were wrong. They used to have these stuck in the holes all along the sides of the ship, everywhere. You wouldn't know what this is for unless you was that guy that night.I mean, you'd grab this out of the hole, run on over there, bam bam on them little feet! Back into the ocean would go a hurt, but not defeated, humongous, giant clam. Ready to strike again when opportunity was better. You know not even the coastal villages was safe from them big clams. You know them big clams had an inland range of about 15 miles. Think of that. I mean our early pioneers and the settlers built little houses all up and down the coast you know. A little inland and stuff like that and they didn't have houses like we got now, with bathrooms and stuff. They built little privies out back. And late at night, maybe a kid would have to go, and he'd go stomping out there in the moonlight. And all they'd hear for miles around...(loud clap/belch).... One less kid for America. One more smiling, smurking, humongous, giant clam.So Americans built forts. Them forts --you know—them pictures of them forts with the wooden points all around. You probably thought them points was for Indians but that's stupid! 'Cause Indians know about doors. But clams didn't. Even if a clam knew about a door, so what? A clam couldn't fit in a door. I mean, he'd come stomping up to a fort at night, put them feet on them points, jump back crying, tears coming out of them everywhere. But Americans couldn't live in forts forever. You couldn't just build one big fort around America. How would you go to the beach? So what they did was they formed groups of people. I mean they had groups of people all up and down the coast form these little alliances. Like up North it was call the Clamshell Alliance. And farther down South it was called the Catfish Alliance. They had these Alliances all up and down the coast defending themselves against these threatening monsters. These humongous giant clams. Andt hey'd go out there, if there was maybe fifteen of them they'd be singing songs in fifteen part harmony. And when one part disappeared, that's how they knew where the clam would be.Which is why Americans only sing in four part harmony to this very day. That proved to be too dangerous. See, what they did was they'd be singing these songs called Clam Chanties, and they'd have these big spears called clampoons. And they'd be walking up and down the beach and the method they eventually devised where they'd have this guy, the most strongest heavy duty true blue American, courageous type dude they could find and they'd have him out there walking up and down the beach by himself with other chicken dudes hiding behind the sand dunes somewhere. He'd be singing the verses. They'd be singing the chorus, and clams would hear 'em. And clams hate music. So clams would come out of the water and they'd come after this one guy. And all you'd see pretty soon was flying all over the sand flying up and down the beach manmanclamclammanmanclam manclamclamman up and down the beach going this way and that way up the hills in the water out of the water behind the trees everywhere. Finally the man would jump over a big sand dune, roll over the side, the clam would come over the dune, fall in the hole and fourteen guys would come out there and stab the shit out of him with their clampoons. That's the way it was. That was one way to deal with them. The other way was to weld two clams together. [I don't believe it. I'm losing it. Hey. What can you do. Another night shot to hell.] Hey, this was serious back then. This was very serious. I mean these songs now are just piddly folk songs. But back then these songs were controversial. These was radical, almost revolutionary songs. Because times was different and clams was a threat to America. That's right. So we want to sing this song tonight about the one last... You see what they did was there was one man, he was one of these men, his name will always be remembered, his name was Reuben Clamzo, and he was one of the last great clam men there ever was. He stuck the last clam stab. The last clampoon into the last clam that was ever seen on this continent. Knowing he would be out of work in an hour. He did it anyway so that you and me could go to the beach in relative safety. That's right. Made America safe for the likes of you and me. And so we sing this song in his memory. He went into whaling like most of them guys did and he got out of that, when he died. You know, clams was much more dangerous than whales. Clams can run in the water, on the water or on the ground, and they are so big sometimes that they can jump and they can spread their kinda shells and kinda almost fly like one of them flying squirrels. You could be standing there thinking that your perfectly safe and all of a sudden whop.... That's true... And so this is the song of this guy by the name of Reuben Clamzo and the song takes place right after he stabbed this clam and the clam was, going through this kinda death dance over on the side somewhere. The song starts there and he goes into whaling and takes you through the next...I sing the part of the guy on the beach by himself. I go like this: Poor old Reuben Clamzo and you go Clamzo Boys Clamzo. That's the part of the fourteen chicken dudes over on the other side. That's what they used to sing. They'd be calling these clams out of the water. Like taunting them making fun of them. Clams would get real mad and come out. Here we go. I want you to sing it in case you ever have an occasion to join such an alliance. You know some of these alliances are still around. Still defending America against things like them clams. If you ever wants to join one, now you have some historic background. So you know where these guys are coming from. It's not just some 60's movement or something, these things go back a long time.Notice the distinction you're going to have to make now between the first and easy Clamzo Boys Clamzo and the more complicated Clamzo Me Boys Clamzo. Stay serious! Folk songs are serious. That's what Pete Seeger told me. Arlo I only want to tell you one thing... Folk songs are serious. I said right. Let's do it in C for Clam...Iet's do it in B... For boy that's a big clam... Iet' s do it in G for Gee, I hope that big clam don't see me. Let's do it in F... For …he sees me. Let's do it back in A...for a clam is coming. Better get this song done quick. The Story of Reuben Clamzo and His Strange Daughter in the Key of A.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1300078 By Bee Gees. By Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Country,Disco,Film/TV,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. Score. 4 pages. Timothy Stapay #889845. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1300078). How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is a song released by the Bee Gees in 1971. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb and was the first single on the group's 1971 album Trafalgar. It was their first US No. 1 single and also reached No. 1 in Cashbox magazine for two weeks. The Bee Gees were a musical group formed in 1958 by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio were especially successful in popular music in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and later as prominent performers in the disco music era in the mid- to late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies: Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the mid- to late 1970s and 1980s. The group wrote all their own original material, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists, and are regarded as one of the most important and influential acts in pop-music history. Bee Gees Lyrics:How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?I can think of younger days when living for my lifeWas everything a man could want to doI could never see tomorrowBut I was never told about the sorrowsAnd, how can you mend a broken heart? How can you stop the rain from falling down? How can you stop the sun from shining? What makes the world go 'round? How can you mend this broken man?How can a loser ever win? Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live againI can still feel the breeze that rustles through the treesAnd misty memories of days gone byWe could never see tomorrowNo one said a word about the sorrowAnd how can you mend a broken heart? How can you stop the rain from falling down? How can you stop the sun from shining? What makes the world go 'round? And how can you mend this broken man?How can a loser ever win? Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live againLa la la la la la, la la la laLa la la la la la, la la la laPlease help me mend my broken heart and let me live againDa da da daDa da da da, da da da da da, da.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1251231 Composed by Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Comedy,Pop,Standards,Traditional. 37 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #845507. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1251231). This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl. The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again. And, he did this seven times! What would he say to her each time? He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested. What a romantic line! Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!” lyrics. Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922. It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson. Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film. Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings. This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM. After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear. The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead. At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody. This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major. Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus. The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away. (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane” at measure 141.)Lots of fun! Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.891956 Composed by A.E.Williams. Arranged by Stephen Davies. 20th Century,Standards. Score and Parts. 74 pages. Stephen Davies #6094485. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956). CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Guitar,Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1009194 Composed by An-lun Huang. 20th Century,Christmas,Classical. Score. 38 pages. DoReMi Edition #594856. Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1009194). Based on the fairy tale “The Little Match Girl” by Hans Christian Anderson (1805-1875), the famous Danish writer, the Beijing Ballet School of China commissioned An-Lun Huang to compose this ballet in 1977. The play was written by Zhang Dun-yi, and the choreographers were Wu Fu-kang and Huang Buo-hong. The premiere took place in Beijing in 1977. It was performed by the school and the Central Opera House Orchestra, conducted by Zheng Xiao-ying. The music is written in Nineteen Century-Romantic style with some strong Scandinavian flavor. Margot Fonteyn, one of the most important ballet dancers of our age, claimed that “the composer has composed the very, very, very good music for this ballet ! “ She then produced a movie of it, which has been broadcasted by the PBS of U.S.A. in early of eighties. Since the great success of the premiere, this ballet and its music have been widely performed and warmly received. A tape of it was also released in China. This is the story of the ballet: In a little Danish town in the nineteenth century, Betty, a little girl who lost her mother, was selling matches along the street during Christmas time. The sound of the church bell reminded her that the time was quite late, but she was unable to go home until she completed her job. An old man came to light the street lights. He gave her some money and left. Betty tried to sell her matches to a carriage, but the carriage just ran away. Snow fell, cold and hungry, she lit a match on the wall to warm herself. A group of “Fire Fairies” appeared. They danced around her and got her warm. Since they disappeared so quickly, Betty lit another match. She saw a big dining room with a beautiful Christmas tree and a lot of food. While some bus boys were handing her a piece of roasted goose, the typical Danish Christmas food, a nobleman in a portrait hanging on the wall suddenly moved. Everything disappeared again. Betty immediately lit the third match, a “Swan Lake” with a beautiful garden appeared. She met her mother with tears because the mother had passed away for years. Mother got a pair of little red shoes for her as the Christmas gift and danced with her. The “Portrait nobleman” brought the mother out of the scene. Everything was gone but the snow storm. The church bell sounded again, with the morning dawn, the old man came to extinguish the street lights. He found the frozen body of the little girl.

Two years before I had had a lovely time in Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Puccini's House, Florence, Sienna, and more. Almost at the end of the trip I stayed a couple of days with my dear musical friends in Perugia, where their then 8-year-old daughter, Martha, was making great strides forward on the violin (mum is a concert pianist and teacher, similarly dad, but on the clarinet. I had booked to stay in Cesena where they had moved two, and I had a lovely time here, two, adding Bologna, Rossini's Museum, Rimini and some of the Adriatic coast to my list of places visited. They, too, had had lockdowns, and cancellations, but quite by chance, the weekend I had planned to be in Cesena, was the rearranged date of a special outside concert in the imposing surroundings of Rocca Malatestiana, a medieval fortress than dominates the town. Martha was going to be performing a violin concerto by Rode, and her dad had adapted the orchestral accompaniment, so that the large clarinet ensemble could take its place on the night. It was a wonderful, moving evening, and Martha played so well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house! When I knew I was visiting them this year, I wrote Martha a little fun piece, with piano accompaniment, that she might have been able to play while I was there. But because of the rescheduled concerto performance, there just wasn't enough time for her to learn and practise the piece with her violin teacher in Bologna. I even added an optional part for clarinet, so dad would not feel left out. Hopefully, one day, I might still hear Waltz for Martha played by its dedicatees! It's a kind of schmalzy Viennese Waltz, in the style of Kreisler and others! You can purchase the piano score and violin part here. The optional clarinet part is available FREE OF CHARGE - by emailing info@philiprbuttall.co.uk.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1167528 Composed by Larry Williams. Contemporary,Folk,Jazz. Individual part. 80 pages. Larry Andrew Williams #767908. Published by Larry Andrew Williams (A0.1167528). A WORD FROM THE COMPOSER Is anyone interested in new reading material anymore? I know that when I was a kid in nineteen hundred and something, the quest for new musical pieces was always one of the funnest aspects of the whole musical journey. Of course I did learn that it would take a long time to nd those few that would resonate with me for a lifetime, but it was always fun trying them all out. It still is, in fact. Well, times change and people change, but I’d still like to believe that same factor carries on. You know, the one about trying out all that music to get to the few you keep. And what about the few we do keep? For guitar players, was it always a classic from the usual suspects, like Albeniz, Sor, Tarrega,, Granados, Rodrigo, Brouwer, Barrios, Villa-Lobos, or anything by Bach? Was it something our band director or private instructor, one of our friends, or our parents wrote? Or – Heaven forbid- something that maybe we ourselves wrote? Or some “unknown guy.” Consider this.Just how often did some unknown composer's piece greatly affect us as we waded through a daunting pile of the familiar from the known masters? And since some, if not most of these classics are required reading, how often did we even get around to giving this unknown guy's piece a try?And furthermore, was this unknown guy - shudder...alive? Let’s face it. In the composer arena, we the living, stand no chance against the deceased (God rest their souls) But by saying “they don’t write ‘em like that anymore,” are we denying ourselves new ground to be broken, doors to be opened, frontiers to be discovered? And isn’t that pioneering spirit just plain ol’ curiosity when it comes right down to it? Well I believe the key lies within the carrying out of these notions that curiosity places in us. It’s climbing the mountain simply because it is there. So, for right now, I’m that unknown guy and I would only urge you to break new ground every day. Lots of trends, ideas, and interests will come and go in your life, but always hang on to that curiosity. It’s what makes the world a smaller neighborhood. Larry Williams.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.809714 Composed by Robert E. Proctor. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 128 pages. R. E. Proctor #2102129. Published by R. E. Proctor (A0.809714). A concerto for Double Bass and orchestra in the traditional fast - slow – fast concerto format. While not overly challenging for the bass soloist, it does explore, to a degree, the upper reaches of the instrument as well as sounding the beautiful low range. The first movement is that might be called Neo – Classical, opening with an 8-measure solo in a Largo or slow tempo. The tempo then changes to Allegro (fast) for the balance of the movement. The movement ends as it began with the double bass playing alone. The second movement is a jazz waltz. In 9/8, it opens with the soloist playing pizzicato against a rhythmic cord progression. The bass and cello sections pick this up to provide a ground upon which the balance of the movement is played over. The second movement is in the relative minor of Bb which is G minor. A haunting melody is introduced by the bass and doubled by the strings. This melody is replayed by various instruments as the Bass Soloist plays variations on this theme. The harp and the bass solo end the movement. The third movement leans toward French Impressionism. This movement is Andantino; however, it is a spirited. Written in cut time, where the half note equals 92 beats per minute. The melody is introduced by the woodwinds with the harp accompanying. The strings and brass join in as the woodwinds repeat the melody. Finally, the bass solo takes charge of the melody using it as a theme and variation. The harp is used extensively in this concerto providing harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic support for the bass. Written in 2015, the concerto is a new work, however, it is not experimental music. It uses the standard orchestral instruments playing in the standard fashion. It is replete with modern harmonic sounds and chord progressions. As concerto's go, this one is not overly difficult providing the bassist with a starting point as a soloist. It does require the soloist to have some mastery over the instrument as the music traverses most of the instrument’s range. Performance time is approximately 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522188 Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship. Score and parts. 190 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6403623. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522188). This essential collection may be all you ever need for your wind instruments at Christmas. It's a bargain price too! These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The publication consists of a four-staff score in concert pitch together with fifteen separate parts in various transpositions plus a simplified optional keyboard part. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. These four-part arrangements use flexible instrumentation so that you can exercise considerable control over the instrumental voicing or use them for non-standard ensembles. You can also create interesting instrumental tone color by omitting groups of instruments. If the ensemble is large enough you could omit brass instruments in the quieter sections, or use a solo trumpet against a woodwind background. There are endless possibilities. The complete set includes: Part 1 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 2 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 3 in B flat, E flat, F and C and Part 4 in B flat, E flat and C. Parts 1 and 2 in C have been printed an octave higher than the pitch shown in the score because invariably the parts lie too low for flute or oboe. For elementary players, a Part 1 in C (low) is included at concert (score) pitch. Parts 3 and 4 in C are in the bass clef. The arrangements could be played by virtually any combination of conventional wind band instruments. Using the optional keyboard part they could also be used as solos, duets or trios. The scores and all the parts are contained in a single 190-page PDF file. Please note that these arrangements are not necessarily compatible with other Kirkpatrick arrangements published by Glyn Joseph Editions. The collection incuers the following favorite carols: Angels We Have Heard On High (Gloria); Lo, How a Rose E’er blooming (Es ist ein Ros entsprungen); O Come, O Come Emmanuel (Veni Emmanuel); The First Noel; Ding Dong! Merrily on High (Bransle de l’Officiel); O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fidelis); Hark! In Little Seeds you will find new hymns from my heart. My devotional life is given to you in my hymnwriting. During the past three years I have been writing songs for the unity of the church - songs reminding us of our baptism. I have been writing biblical story hymns for lesser-known characters. I have written paperless songs that may be easily memorized. I set a Rumi poem. There are new hymns for Christian missions from everywhere to everywhere. You will find new texts and musical settings for folk songs from around the world. I hope I have treated these with the love and respect they deserve. You will find alternate arrangements of some songs that may be useful in different settings. Lim Swee Hong composed three tunes for this collection at my request. I am also pleased to include Lianne Tan's first published hymn tune in Little Seeds
